About Ugena Whitlock

We are our stories. I write to make sense of the world through mine. I hope you will visit for awhile.

Welcome to my blog & website! Like me, it’s a work in progress!

I have been blogging for for over ten years. My topics vary depending on my observations and reflections. These small glimpses of the world around me–and my life in it–make up the kind of writing I enjoy. I am passionate about old things–typewriters, vinyl record albums, radios–and I have a growing collection of early and mid century artifacts (stuff). As the saying goes, “If you have to ask, you won’t understand, and if you understand, you won’t have to ask.” Because I am a Boomer born in 1963, I am an amateur researcher of both Kennedy assassinations, and I have a fascination with their charisma and appeal to people all these years after their deaths.

I am an INELDA-trained End of Life Doula and a member of the National End of Life Doula Association and Lifespan Doulas. I am trained to provide support and guidance for someone nearing death and their loved ones. I believe the dying experience can be enriched, peaceful, and meaningful.

I am also Dean of the College of Education, Human Performance, and Health and Professor of Curriculum & Instruction at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Our College is committed to improving schools and schooling by providing high-quality Teacher Education to our students. The work is hard but worth it–our students are proficient educators who change the lives of children and adolescents in our region. The faculty and staff I am blessed to work with lift me up by their daily commitment to our mission.

Sarah, our dogs Duncan and Caroline, two cats Spike and Trevor, and I moved to Spartanburg, SC. A native of North Alabama, I hold a B.S.Ed. in English and History from Athens State University, a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction from Coppin State University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction with a specialization in Curriculum Theory and Women’s & Gender Studies from Louisiana State University. I have a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University.

I don’t keep my blog as current as I want to. Yet I keep hanging in there–I just keep swimming.
